PR vs. Advertising

It’s a common misconception that PR and Advertising are all the same. Most people, and it’s not really their fault, don’t understand the difference. But did you know PR is more effective and less expensive than traditional advertising? It’s also the way bigger companies like Walmart and Apple have started to launch their new products and campaigns. That’s because PR is the art of getting the public to side with you, to trust your product and understand what it can do for them before you even spend one cent on a TV ad or billboard. PR gets the reporter/blogger/enthusiastic citizen journalist to promote you to their friends, neighbors and community. Think about why you buy certain things, or where you hear about certain products first. Word of mouth and endorsements from people you trust are much stronger than any ad you hear on the radio or see on TV.

I know I personally am more interested and more likely to try reading a book my friend says is good, or a facial cleanser/diet/vacation spot my neighbor tells me about.
